THE TOPICS:

We’ll be continuing our tradition of reviewing the 2012 predictions we made last year, and making predictions for the coming year. There are no formal presentations, but feel free to break out laptops while you nosh. Talking about FileMaker is, of course, inevitable – but not required! Mainly this is an opportunity to wrap up the year with some good food, networking, and gossip. If you’ve never been to one of our meetings, this is a good time to start! We’d love to have you.

The Philadelphia FileMaker User Group was founded in 2004 as an initiative by FileMaker Business Alliance Platinum member IT Solutions Consulting.  The group’s goal is to provide an open forum for FileMaker developers and those interested in FileMaker to meet, brainstorm and network.

We hold meetings the 4th Tuesday of every month at 6PM, in the office of IT Solutions Consulting, Inc., at 414 Commerce Drive, Suite 150, Fort Washington PA.

Meetings are open to all, regardless of background and there’s no charge to attend.

Year End Meeting Recap

I’m going to let a first time attendee, Patricia Kirby Gibler (of enable businesses), give her thoughts on last Tuesday’s meeting – which she’s kindly letting me reprint from an email she sent us the day after the meeting.  They’re not just kind words – they’re an eloquent description of the power of FileMaker to empower users.  “Turning data into relationships” indeed.

It also reinforces my belief in the power of face-to-face interaction.  User groups have been around for decades upon decades now, and they might feel a little old-school to some  (maybe a little rebranding is in order: PhillyFilemakerMeetup?), but IMO there’s still no substitute for people talking together in the same room.

Next meeting 12/7 – 6th Annual Year End Bonanza!

We’re going to skip November again and head right into the end of the year with our 6th Annual Year End Bonanza, on December 7th.

Usually we do product giveaways, but frankly I don’t want to wear out the munificence of all the awesome product vendors who’ve donated in the past, so I’m going to be working on other creative ways to celebrate. Pretty sure there will be some kind of swag/gifts involved.

Also, of course, we’ll review last year’s predictions and make some new ones for 2011. You guys scored much higher this year than last, though that isn’t saying much, since last year predictions were 0% accurate.

Names of predictors withheld, except where shaming is necessary.

PREDICTIONS FOR 2010

  • Marc Adler will easily pass the FM 11 Certification Exam- True!
  • Marc Adler will fail the FM 11 Certification Exam – False, and gee, we’re a sarcastic bunch, aren’t we?
  • NASA will make First Contact – False!
  • BJ and the Bear will be released for the big screen – False!
  • FileMaker/Drupal integration will mature – True!
  • FileMaker will introduce a new version of FM that introduces no new features – False, and shame on you, J.S.  You’re fired.
  • FileMaker will release a native iPhone app – True!
  • Native FM scripting will allow full SQL manipulation (no plugin) – False!
  • Apple will introduce a tablet computer that runs FileMaker – True!

I suppose there’s still two months left for the aliens to call the White House, but I’m not holding my breath.

November meeting cancelled, 5th Annual Year End Bonanza December 15

Given that November falls close to Thanksgiving and the December Bonanza party follows closely after, we’re cancelling the November meeting.

The 2009 Year End Bonanza blow out party will be December 15th, so mark your calendars!  A usual the dining fare will be significantly upgraded, and we’ll be looking to stock up on giveaways for the event – more on that as the date approaches.

I’ll also note here that on top of this being our 5th anniversary of the Bonanza, someone that walks through the door December 15th will be our 1,000th PFUG attendee.  Whether you get a big honking special prize or a Burger King kids meal crown, we haven’t worked out yet.
