I started thinking about this series of posts (yep, this is #1 in a series) after a few conversations I had with people at this year’s FileMaker DevCon. I’d strike up a conversation with someone at lunch or at the bar, we’d exchange stories and experiences…and inevitably the talk would shift to why people come to DevCon in the first place.
Reason number 1: for the community. Hands down. The clear pleasures and advantages of meeting other people who are engaged in the same practice as you – with whom you can share ideas, learn from and teach – always trump session topics, what’s on the lunch menu, what kind of swag you can haul back, or how many banners you can affix to the bottom of your convention badge. One of the things that’s sometimes lost when you do a hand count of how many people in the room have iPads is how many people in the room are there because of the other people. I stepped off the puddle jumper plane from LA to San Diego (en route from Philadelphia) and squinted into the bright light, scowling at the light breeze. 71 degrees? Seriously?
I’m a firm believer that the West Coast was invented to mock East Coasters. “See how happy you can be when you don’t need to sweat in 100 degree weather or shovel four feet of snow off your Subaru Forrester? And oh, by the way, here we actually use our sunroofs.” Uncomfortable pause. “And, come on. A Subaru Forrester? Do you wear anoraks too?”
It wasn’t always this way with the FileMaker DevCon. It used to be that you’d crawl out of your transportation device of choice into a humid steam bath and say to yourself, “yeah, okay, this sun thing is nice, but at least I don’t live 20 miles from downtown huddled in an air conditioning bubble”.
Matt Navarre, MSN Media and FileMaker Talk, presented a fantastic session at FileMaker DevCon on optimizing searches and how to add a Google-like search feature to any FileMaker solution. I chatted with Matt on Friday afternoon (8/14) about fmSearchResults, a downloadable solution that you can integrate into your solution to improve searching functionality which is available at www.seedcode.com. We’re excited to start implementing fmSearchResults into our solutions at IT Solutions.
