I was fortunate to attend day one of Pause on Error in Portland and had a chance to chat with John Sindelar (SeedCode) and Ernest Koe (Proof) about what it was like to organize Pause II. We debuted this interview at the Philadelphia FileMaker User Group meeting held at the IT Solutions office in Fort Washington.
Jason sat down with Matt O’Dell for a brief conversation about some of the examples he planned to present to the user group yesterday. They also discussed Bento 3, field encryption and iPhoto integration. And the iPhone!

Matt’s presentation covered some of the advertised uses of Script Sequences – namely sequencing external batch or shell scripts with FileMaker scripts to extend the capabilities of FileMaker Server for things like imports/exports. Tim Neudecker did a great job last night both in terms of material presentation and in shepherding the group through a roundtable discussion of system design issues, touching on:
- hardware/insfrastructure concerns
- application concerns
- data integrity
Some of the highlights included a discussion of UI metaphors: data driven US compared to task driven US, and hybrid schemes.
You will want to fast forward about 5 minutes in; the audio dropped at the beginning of the presentation.
I sat down with Alan Deffenderfer, ABD Enterprises, before the Philadelphia FileMaker User Group DevCon 2009 recap meeting held at the IT Solutions office in Fort Washington. Alan shared a couple “wow” moments from DevCon just before the meeting started.
Here’s the DevCon Recap video stream. It’s close to 80 minutes long, so you may want to have it running in the background while you work. Jason Mundok, Alan Deffenderfer, David Hollander and Bryant Minard present. We had about 20 people in person and 7 watching the live stream. You can blame the shaky cam late in the video on me trying to do smooth panning by holding my MacBook over my head and pointing iSight while watching the feed on another laptop. Yes, lame. But at least not a FAIL.

Kirk Bowman, Mighty Data, may have been the single busiest man I know at FileMaker DevCon this year. I caught up with Kirk in a dark hallway just minutes after an unconference session, where Kirk served on a discussion panel. We hope to have Kirk join us for a user group meeting at the IT Solutions office in the upcoming year.
I had a few minutes to catch up with Jesse Barnum, 360 Works, on a very busy Saturday afternoon (8/15) of FileMaker DevCon 2009 in San Francisco. Jesse visited the Philly FileMaker User Group at the IT Solutions office this past spring.
Ernest Koe, Proof, joined me for an interview between the morning sessions (8/15) at the 2009 FileMaker DevCon. Ernest visited the IT Solutions office for a Philly FileMaker meeting earlier this year.
