FileMaker DevCon 2012 Session Schedule Announced

You can find the schedule here.  Now might be an appropriate time to pick up the $300 early bird discount – there’s a lot of great stuff in there.  One interesting change in the Conference is the addition of Vendor Demos as a Conference Track – you’ll see them sprinkled through the posted schedule.

PhillyFileMaker’s own Jerry Salem of IT Solutions will be presenting on Tuesday at 2PM.  Feel free to ignore all other tracks in that slot and give Jerry your full, undivided and devoted attention.

Look Both Ways Before Crossing the Street: System Documentation

Session Description

Why bother writing comments or documentation or following standards in the back end; especially if all the users ever see is the user interface? Now ask yourself another question: if you are hit by a bus, will your clients, colleagues, or development teammates be able to understand the code you have written to a degree that they can complete the project without you? Even in the rare cases where the answer is “yes,” inheriting your undocumented code may well jeopardize the project by delaying the schedule and putting it over budget. The simple act of following standards and creating documentation will make you a better programmer and will also help you to remember design choices you may have made years ago. What exactly are the things you should document? This session will help you make wise choices about the type of documentation to keep for a system, and also to create documentation that will actually help you and others understand your solutions.

Products & Technologies
  • FileMaker Pro
What You Will Learn
  • Learn to comment an entire solution to remember what you did months or years in the past
  • User documentation is just as important for the developer as for the users. Make it work for you!
  • All choices are made for good reasons, those reasons may not be true anymore, and what were those reasons?
  • Give yourself the discipline to be a better developer

DevCon 2011 Recap

2011 FileMaker Developer ConferenceOver the past ten years, the annual FileMaker Developer Conference (DevCon) has been a truly enjoyable experience for me. It’s the one place on the globe that the best and brightest FileMaker talent gather for a little under a week to share ideas, learn techniques, find answers to challenges, collaborate, and get a few hints about the future of FileMaker.

This year’s conference was held at the gorgeous San Diego Hilton Bayfront where we enjoyed temperatures in the 70s with low humidity and a pleasant breeze. The accommodations and facility was top notch, with plenty of space for the conference and all of the normal hotel patrons.

Developer Conference Spot Check

I arrived to this year’s FileMaker Developer Conference (DevCon) with just enough time to drop my bags and get to the Keynote Session.  I don’t think I would recommend cutting the trip so close next time, but it certainly made for an efficient day with an exciting ending.  The keynote was jam packed. It started with an overview of a few very nice solutions that have been built this past year to highlight the productivity gains and problems that can be solved with Filemaker Pro and FileMaker Go together.  In addition there were talks from FileMaker Product Managers on features that they are working on for future versions of Pro, Go and Server.  While I can’t go into any details here, I am certain that it will be a great year for FileMaker developers and users.

FileMaker Feud at DevCon 2011

If you are going to DevCon 2011, and are a fan of the Family Feud, you might want to check out the FileMaker version of the popular game show – FileMaker Feud.

Whether you want to be a spectator or an actual contestant is your choice, but MightyData (who is sponsoring the event) would love for your answers to be part of the survey.

You can check out all the details at MightyData’s FileMaker Feud.

Why User Groups matter…and how to start one (Post #1)

So this guy walks into a San Diego hotel lobby…

I started thinking about this series of posts (yep, this is #1 in a series) after a few conversations I had with people at this year’s FileMaker DevCon.  I’d strike up a conversation with someone at lunch or at the bar, we’d exchange stories and experiences…and inevitably the talk would shift to why people come to DevCon in the first place.

Reason number 1: for the community.  Hands down.  The clear pleasures and advantages of meeting other people who are engaged in the same practice as you – with whom you can share ideas, learn from and teach –  always trump session topics, what’s on the lunch menu, what kind of swag you can haul back, or how many banners you can affix to the bottom of your convention badge.  One of the things that’s sometimes lost when you do a hand count of how many people in the room have iPads is how many people in the room are there because of the other people. 5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker featuring Lee Lukehart

Lee Lukehart, SavvyData, has been at the forefront of data visualization for many years. When FileMaker 11 was released with the new FileMaker Charts tool, Lee wrote a white paper and presented a webinar on the feature for FileMaker TechNet members. Lee’s company, SavvyData, also recently put together a couple classes in the San Francisco area on the topics of Charting and Business Intelligence. Lee and I had a chance to chat at the 2010 FileMaker Developer Conference.

Download Lee’s demo from the keynote at savvydata.com.

5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker featuring Mark Richman

Mark Richman, Skeleton Key, presented a packed session about FileMaker and WAN performance on Monday of the FileMaker Developer Conference. It was so popular he was rescheduled to repeat the session on Tuesday afternoon. Mark joined me for an interview to discuss his session and the latest happenings at Skeleton Key.
