5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker featuring Lee Lukehart

Lee Lukehart, SavvyData, has been at the forefront of data visualization for many years. When FileMaker 11 was released with the new FileMaker Charts tool, Lee wrote a white paper and presented a webinar on the feature for FileMaker TechNet members. Lee’s company, SavvyData, also recently put together a couple classes in the San Francisco area on the topics of Charting and Business Intelligence. Lee and I had a chance to chat at the 2010 FileMaker Developer Conference.

Download Lee’s demo from the keynote at savvydata.com.

5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker featuring Mark Richman

Mark Richman, Skeleton Key, presented a packed session about FileMaker and WAN performance on Monday of the FileMaker Developer Conference. It was so popular he was rescheduled to repeat the session on Tuesday afternoon. Mark joined me for an interview to discuss his session and the latest happenings at Skeleton Key.

5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker featuring Matt Navarre

Matt Navarre, MSN Media, joined me for a chat at the FileMaker Developer Conference 2010 in San Diego about vertical market solutions, FileMaker’s Quick Find feature, and of course his FileMaker Talk podcast. Matt is moderating several panel discussions at Devcon this year, hopefully a growing trend for future conferences.

5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker featuring Molly Connolly

On Tuesday, August 17, at the FileMaker Developer Conference I had a chance to chat with FBA Excellence Award winner Molly Connolly, Thorsen Consulting, about several panel discussions that she is moderating at this year’s DevCon. It’s always a pleasure to get a chance to chat with Molly. Hopefully we can get her out to IT Solutions sometime in the months to come for a user group meeting.

5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker featuring John Sindelar

We’re at the FileMaker Developer Conference 2010 in San Diego, CA getting ready for an excellent week of networking and learning about all of things FileMaker. This afternoon I dusted off the video camera and started lining up a great list of FileMaker experts to spend a few minutes chatting with to see what they have coming up at DevCon and what mind blowing tips and tricks they’re seeing out in the community. I’m kicking off a new batch of 5 Minutes with Philly FileMaker interviews with our good buddy John Sindelar, SeedCode. John is doing his annual Year in Review session Monday morning, which I already know will be a DevCon highlight.

Chad Sager and Colin Keefe are also representing IT Solutions at DevCon. If you’re at the conference, be sure to say hi!

Customizing the Toolbar in FileMaker Pro 11

The status toolbar is the gray area located horizontally across the top of a FileMaker Pro 11 window and can be easily customized to suit your needs. If you’re using older versions of FileMaker, the status toolbar combines all of the functionality of the old status area, which was located on the left side of the window, and the optional standard toolbar, both of which existed in versions prior to FileMaker 10. By default the status toolbar comes loaded with commonly used features, such as record navigation (the book), Show All, New and Delete Record, and Find. Depending on how you use FileMaker, there may be other buttons that make more sense for you to have on the toolbar. With a few clicks, you can set up your FileMaker toolbar however you’d like.

Pausing in Portland: a written recap

Check out the following blog post for a written recap from Pause On Error, the FileMaker unconference in Portland. Update from Jason Young on “What’s Faster?”

At last week’s meeting I presented some FileMaker performance analysis findings that were compiled by Jason Young, Mighty Data (Denver, CO). He had shared them during his session “What’s Faster?” at the recent PauseOnError unconference in Portland, OR a few weeks back. Jason sent a follow-up email about some of his findings and some tidbits he’s learned since Pause On Error, along with the slides from his presentation, which are attached here. If you weren’t at the meeting, check out the meeting video on an earlier post to gain some context for this update (fast forward to the 54:20 mark).
