Pause On Error: London – This Week!

Pause On Error, the FileMaker development unconference series that started back in 2009 as a way to bring FileMaker developers and enthusiasts together for a couple intense days of sharing, discussion and feedback, is heading over the big pond (or Atlantic Ocean rather) for an event in London on October 20 and 21. Pause[x]London is the first in a new approach to the unconferences. The steering committee is licensing the concept to anyone interested in hosting their own version of Pause On Error. The idea remains the same, though. The event is self-organized and free to attendees (limit 100), with the help of some nice donors/sponsors.

Pause[x]London will be trying another new concept: speaking via Skype. Our good buddy, Mark Richman, from Skeleton Key in St. Louis will be leading a session on (what else?) WAN performance. Only he’ll be doing it in his fuzzy slippers from the comforts of his digs in St. Louis. We’ll be keeping our eye on this, as this brave new session style could mean great things for future Pause events AND user groups like the Philadelphia FileMaker User Group.

If you can make it to Pause[x]London, do yourself a favor and get there. The Pause On Error events are a great way to build community around FileMaker development and get access to some of the best minds in the business.

MightyData’s FileMaker Feud

At our DevCon Recap meeting earlier this week I mentioned MightyData’s FileMaker Feud session at DevCon. MightyData recently posted a video of the first round so we could relive the magic…or live the magic if you weren’t lucky enough to be there when it all went down! Check it out here: http://www.mightydata.com/blog/filemaker-feud-2011-round-1/

DevCon 2011 Recap

2011 FileMaker Developer ConferenceOver the past ten years, the annual FileMaker Developer Conference (DevCon) has been a truly enjoyable experience for me. It’s the one place on the globe that the best and brightest FileMaker talent gather for a little under a week to share ideas, learn techniques, find answers to challenges, collaborate, and get a few hints about the future of FileMaker.

This year’s conference was held at the gorgeous San Diego Hilton Bayfront where we enjoyed temperatures in the 70s with low humidity and a pleasant breeze. The accommodations and facility was top notch, with plenty of space for the conference and all of the normal hotel patrons.

FileMaker Feud at DevCon 2011

If you are going to DevCon 2011, and are a fan of the Family Feud, you might want to check out the FileMaker version of the popular game show – FileMaker Feud.

Whether you want to be a spectator or an actual contestant is your choice, but MightyData (who is sponsoring the event) would love for your answers to be part of the survey.

You can check out all the details at MightyData’s FileMaker Feud.

Pause On Error: In Review

PauseOnErrorPause On Error III (POE3) came and went this past February. This version of the increasingly popular FileMaker unconference was held at the Ace Hotel in New York City, where well over a 100 FileMaker developers gathered to share and discuss ideas about software development, mostly, but not necessarily, of the FileMaker kind. Colin Keefe and I represented IT Solutions. Here are my thoughts about POE3 and the energy and commitment surrounding the global FileMaker development community.

FileMaker: Inspector Keyboard Shortcuts

Enjoy this guest post by our friends at Skeleton Key in St. Louis.

I used to use the keyboard shortcut in previous versions of FileMaker Pro to get to the “object info” window. One of the things I didn’t like about FileMaker Pro 11 is not being able to get to the inspector without using the mouse. Then I found the shortcut. You may have known this from the start, but if you did shame on you for not telling me :-)

Mac InspectorWindows InspectorWhile in Layout Mode on Mac OS X you can use Command+1 to go to the Position tab of the inspector. Command+2 takes you to the Appearance tab and Command+3 takes you to the Data tab. Use Control instead of Command on Windows. Once there, the tab key will navigate you through the items on that inspector tab.

Also if you have multiple inspectors open at once (one showing each tab), then these keyboard shortcuts will switch inspectors for you instead of switching tabs on the current inspector window.

Thought you might want to know about this hidden gem!
